    Pronunciation of Dathorn

    Until recently my friend used to think it was Da-Thorn (he is a crazy Australian)

    I have always gone with Dat-Horn
    Dat= like 'that' "dat car is stupid"
    Horn= car horn

    is he crazy, or do yall have other pronunciations for the name? (or does it not keep you up at night )

    lol see, I'm a krazy freaky Star Wars dude;
    so I have no problem correctly saying it

    It is Daa-thorn; say it like it is spelled.
    Dath - Orn

    Like a Da, like a child saying 'Da Da'
    and Thorn, like a stupid thorn in my side

    Got it? Get it? Good! Now love it

              Oh no! After all this time......

              I thought Andrew HIMSELF once told me it was Daw-Thorne (rhymes with Hawthorn).

              I don't know about yall', but I think this nearly unsolvable investigation is rapidly escalating into mysteriously shrouded urban mythology!!

                Thanks for the confirmation, Andrew - I've been pronouncing it correctly all along.

                ps. I spent years calling Borland's Delphi product "DEL-FEE" until I attended a programming seminar and to my horror learned that it was pronounced "DEL-FY" (as in "FLY").

                  Lots of Aussies - count me in!

                  I always thought of it as "Da-thorn"

                  I've never said the word Dathorn before.

                    I use to think it was Da-thorn, then I remember Andrew Stating (on WHT i think) that it was Day-thorn. But I still call it Da-thorn to myself

                        Surprised and Dismayed...

                        Considering the normally erudite level of the contributors to this forum, I am somewhat surprised and (yes, I'll admit it, even dismayed) at the obvious lack of understanding of the Dathorn nomen.
                        Derivation is, of course, Greco-Latin, with the root of the emphatic syllable undeniably "datum" (singular of data). Datum is pronounced (by anyone with a brain in his/her head) DAY - tum. It is assuredly not DAAAAA, although such a pronunciation would make sense to those in Australia and others who live upside down. They would misapprehend simply because ther linguistic assumption is, I believe, that anything with an "a" in it must rhyme with BAAAAA, since that is the uulation uttered by the sheep on the stations where, it is my understanding, all Australian children are sent to be raised from an early age.
                        A few of you managed to get it right, save one small point. The secondary syllable, "thorn" is Latin but by way of the Germanic limb of the linguistic tree. Therefore the "th" can be, but is not required to be, pronounced "ex-tonguera," i.e., with the tongue outside the mouth. For those not familiar with the finer points of such phrasing, the very best way to simulate it is to grasp the tip of your protruded tongue between thumb and forefinger and pinch hard to keep it motionless whilst saying thorn like the thorn in the lion's paw.
                        This results in the only truly proper pronunciation which is, phonetically: "Day" + "thuhhh-orn-ouch".
