    opening port(s) on comp so ppl can see server...

    hey guys; I got the usual Apache/PHP/mySQL/etc.
    running on my personal comp for development reasons.

    Anyways, more of a thing to "woo" friends with,
    I've installed and setup an FTP Server as well.

    Now on my personal comp, its on 56K Dailup as I've
    yet to go get a router...well, okay ~ dead broke (@ least outside Dathorn payments).

    Point is, how do I let ppl see my server?
    I've tried simply http://my-ip-here and didn't work.

    Tried like http://my-ip-here/FTPDir etc. still no work.

    Tried only ports I know of: ( | to seperate them)
    21 | 2346 | 2082 | 2095 | 2046

    And 21 is blocked, obviously...
    the others, bring up nothing.

    I'm putting them in like http://my-ip-here: port etc.
    and still no work (spaced because made a smily)

    Anybody know how to fix this?
    Or is it because I'm using 56K Dailup? (Even though IP is correct each time I try)

    BTW, the FTP Server works fine;
    I've tested it between comps, if I just
    enter the IP as FTP Addie, works perfectly.

    What port do you have your FTP server answering on?

    Also, does this topic belong in Web Design?

          Like I said, its on my personal XP Home Edition comp

          The FTP works fine, set to port 21...
          If I try to access my server, via http://my-ip-here:21 says
          that Port 21 is blocked for security reasons

          It works fine, the FTP server,, because I dailed up
          and accessed the FTP (WS FTP LE) from my cable comp;
          as well, two friends uploaded some test files to it.

          I'd assume this is for the Web Design topic;
          I mean, technically it is...right? (just don't blame me! It was the UFOs fault!!)

            Jonathan,

            have you tried?

            ftp://your-ip-here:21

              You should not use port 21 to access web server. It is on port 80 which is default and you do not have to speify it. Try http://your-ip.

              If it does not work, you have some kind of firewall blocking it.

              Try https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2. That is GRC's shieldsUp, scan engine. It will scan your IP and chech which ports are open. If it shows port 80 then it is not blocked. However, ShieldUp wil warn you that it is security hole, but ignore, it is, if you do not want it,but you do.

              Also, take care that you investigate and patch known vulnerabilities.

                I'm using the old free ZoneAlarm

                On the family cable comp, all ports
                are "Green" or STEALTHED

                I'll need to test the ones
                on my personal computer, the one
                running the server and so forth, tonight

                  Vary confusing! Jonathan, you have three different servers running: MySQL, Apache and FTP. Which are you trying to access? Or having trouble with?

                  I could really use the little smilie that smack his head against the wall!

                      If you're ftp'ing with a web browser to a standard configured ftp server running on port 20 and 21, then use ftp://ipaddress or ftp://domain_name. The easiest way is to use a "real" ftp client (Smart FTP, Cute FTP, etc.) and ftp to ipaddress or domain_name.

                        Sorry didn't reply earlier.

                        The FTP Server worked fine.
                        The Apache (With PHP/mySQL) I could
                        not access @ all

                        But anyways -- realized I had mostly
                        same settings for firewall, as did family comp
                        and it had stealthed all the ports

                        Lowered protection level to medium (normal),
                        and it worked perfectly; now I have to figure
                        a good mySQL/PHP backed script to pass-protect my phpMyAdmin
