can an entire domain be password protected

Password protecting a "directory" is easy enough in cpanel. But I need to password protect the entire domain, so when someone puts the domain name in the browser address line, it brings up the password protect box asking for username and password. Is this possible? I can't see anyway to do it from "Password Protect Dirs" in cpanel.

You would have to create a .htaccess but what to put in it i would not know off the top of my head. You could always create one for a sub-folder and ue that as an example

    Have you tried searching google.

You just have to password protect your public_html directory. You will probably have to edit the .htaccess file manually if you can't do it from cPanel.

I think I tried protecting public_html but it didn't work, so I had to create index file in that one and put all pages in a sub directory and protect that one. But that was a while ago, I might be wrong.
