Do you run a Forum on you site?

    Hi,
I've been using Discus forum for a long time, and it's fine. But kinda limited.

I wanted to install one of those we have on the Cpanel.

Which one do you think it's better Invision or phpBB?

What about this one Vbulletin? Is it in ours Cpanels?

Which one has more features? Registration, avatars, email notifications, etc...

    Thanks a lot

    1) IPB, in my opinion, is the best free forums out there,
if you do not want the LIGHTEST damn one out there.

    2) phpBB is okay, but IPB is better, again, IMO.

    3) vBulletin costs $180 for a SINGLE domain license (unlimited, or $80 for year)
and MUST be installed manually, or you can pay them to do it for you.

Finally, whatever you get, please I URGE you to
manually install-- cPanel install seems to mess stuff up

The thing is that on the cpanel the program is free. If I get manually I have to get from the company and it will charge me, right?

        New

I just installed PhpBB. I DO like Invision better but for simple needs PhpBB is fine and much easier to install/maintain.

This is my new one (not yet announced to my neighbors):

this is my phpbb board: http://forums.gamersmark.com

IPB or PHPBB are just preference really. Both are free, although for IPB they will charge for support.

OZ very nice your forum. Did you install it manually?

I am just worried about installing a new forum, cause I have been running the other forum for 3 years and there are a lot of good stuff in there.

Once I install the new one, the most I can do is have a link to old forum. right?

And do you guys know any good free script for classifields?

            Thanks

I know there's someone working on a Discus to phpBB conversion (to import the Discus messages into phpBB). Its not done yet, but there's a thread at http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic...ghlight=discus you might want to follow.

I found a converter for phpBB from WebBBS, so I chose phpBB as my forum of choice when I moved mine. I like phpBB, but have not used Invision from the Admin side, so I can't make a fair comparison.

The installer in Cpanel has worked fine for the 7 or 8 forums I have installed.

Yeah, it was a manual install.

I also customized the template files and installed a different skin to make it fit my desing. I hopefully will write my own forums over this summer though, so...

i urge you to use these forums

they are so far the best! extreamly fast, and supposedly really low resource usage.

it can be hacked to add features, and they have a site for them to be downloaed with directions. plus upgrading is the easiest thing to do in the world.
been using them for only a short while, but someone here suggested them, and i have had nothing but GREAT success with them.

if ya wana check them out.

I took a look at PunBB. It IS lightning fast but certainly on the ugly side. Is there a repository anywhere of alternative skins for PunBB?

i dont find it ugly at all... its very professional looking. there is a site link on that page for hacks and other themes.

however with that said... you can only change the color of your forum and add a title image or two.

if im not mistaken their is work being done to include a better theme support possibly.

its ultra fast, and the theme's are only color based, its not ugly at all either. very professional look.

granted their no phpBB, but thats what you get for increased performance, and quality.

I am impressed with the speed of PunBB and when version 1.2 comes out (anyone know when?), I'll replace my Invisionfree board (which worked okay until they screwed everything up making upgrades and lost all my messages.) I love the idea of less stuff means less stuff to go wrong.

My preferred, relatively simple skin shouldn't be that hard to add to PunBB:

yes, its extreamly easy to upgrade using punBB.

and it would be no problem doing that theme you have. you can go the with just colors or add the one image for the boarder, altho that means u have to edit the code ( i think ). punBB official forums are very active and the host moderates it all the time, so you can always search and ask quesitons.
