    1/6/08 - cpanel55, cpanel56, cpanel57, cpanel58, cpanel59 MySQL Upgrade to 5.0.x

MySQL 5 offers many new features and performance enhancements. It also resolves a rather serious bug where a single PHP 5 script can crash the entire MySQL 4.1.x server under certain circumstances on RHEL 5.

On Sunday, January 6th, we will be upgrading cpanel55, cpanel56, cpanel57, cpanel58, and cpanel59 from MySQL 4.1.x to MySQL 5.0.x.

We highly recommend making sure that all of your scripts are compatible with MySQL 5 with strict mode disabled prior to the upgrade. We will not be running it with strict mode enabled as this is generally the cause for most of the compatibility problems. We're giving you quite a bit of advance notice to allow enough time for you to address any possible problems that might arise before the upgrade actually takes place. Based on our testing thus far, most scripts should have no problems with this upgrade, especially if you are running the most recent version.

After MySQL is upgraded on each server we have to recompile PHP 4 and PHP 5. Until this is complete (which may take up to one hour), PHP scripts will return a 500 Internal Server error. Once the recompiling has completed, these internal server errors will go away.

During this recompile we will be using cPanel's newly stable EasyApache 3 (EA3). Doing so does result in some minor changes that you should take note of:

    1. Directory Indexes - The new default listing for directory index files is the following:

    Code:
    DirectoryIndex index.htm index.html index.shtml index.xhtml index.wml index.perl index.pl index.plx index.ppl index.cgi index.jsp index.js index.jp index.php4 index.php3 index.php index.phtml default.htm default.html home.htm
If you happen to have more than one index file (which is generally not recommended) and need them to display in a different order then you will need to add a DiretoryIndex line to your domain's .htaccess file. For almost all users, this won't need to be changed.

    2. PHP AddHandlers - The correct AddHandler statements for PHP will be the following:

    For PHP 4:

    Code:
    AddHandler application/x-httpd-php4 .php
Note that there is now a 4 on the end, prior to the upgrade it has been x-httpd-php for PHP 4.

For PHP 5 it is the same as before:

    Code:
    AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php
PHP 4 will still be the default version used on all servers unless you specifically have your .htaccess file setup to use PHP 5 instead. You will want to double check these once the upgrade is complete because cPanel runs a conversion script for .htaccess files which may cause some of your customizations to change.

Just to give you an idea of our future plans, over the next several months we will be changing this such that PHP 5 will be default and PHP 4 will be a secondary option. Not longer after, we will be removing PHP 4 as it has reached its end of life and will no longer be supported/patched. Once PHP 4 is removed, we will be upgrading all servers to Apache 2.x, which is necessary for our complete Ruby on Rails deployment which should follow shortly after.

We will be posting announcements and sending out notifications via e-mail for each of these processes as we schedule them. We'll be doing them all one at a time over the next several months until everything is completed.

Due to some ongoing required maintenance on cpanel58 taking far longer than expected we will be delaying the upgrade for this server until tomorrow sometime between 5:00PM CST and 9:00PM CST. It is necessary for us to wait until this backend maintenance is complete before we proceed with the upgrade. I do apologize for the inconvenience. I will update this thread again once the cpanel58 upgrade begins tomorrow evening.
