    DDoS issues

    Hi

A friend of mine hosts a couple of domains at Dathorn and he's very glad both with prices and service.

My situation is kind of different, so I need some details before making any decisions about moving to Dathorn.

Until recently I was hosting a non-commercial small-scale (about 1000 pages) political project about ethnic conflicts, which is not financed by anyone but me - a private person. The subject is considered to be very controversial in some countries, so there were constant attacks and hacking attempts all the times.

Starting from two weeks ago the matters became worse: my site has been under a constant large-scale DDoS attack. The IPs of attacking computers (which I'm sure are just "zombies" anyway) are spoofed, so it's very resource and time-consuming to determine where the requests are coming from. Anyway my hoster since then has suspended my account because he cannot sacrifice his other customers and spend all the time fighting to defend a $5/month-client. I can understand his reasons but still it doesn't improve my situation in any way.

Now... I want to know: does Dathorn has any means/experience with resisting such kind of attacks. If yes, then will Andrew be ok with having such a troublemaker as me as a customer of Dathorn?

    Yours,
    inseige

Naturally Andrew will have to give you the final answer, but if he can determine the target of DDOS attacks I doubt he'll let the target domain remain active.

A week or so ago I had a very inactive domain with email accounts that for whatever reason became the target of spam attacks -- Andrew said it was on the order of >1 hit per second. (Now that's a lot of spam.) Anyway, for the sake of the other accounts on the server he had to disable the email service for that account. Of course I wasn't thrilled with that, but I understand. I have other accounts on the server so I didn't want them impacted, and the same goes for anybody else's domains on that server.

You seem to understand the impacts of a heavy DDOS in a shared environment, which must be more resource intensive than a mass of spam. So don't be too optimistic, but maybe Andrew will allow the domain -- at least until it gets attacked.

We do have a lot of things in place to prevent the effects of DDoS attacks from occuring but if you are being attacked then you should not be signing up for our service. You need to find a service that is specifically suited to your needs and it will likely be costly as DoS attacks bring lots of bandwidth usage as well that you likely aren't even seeing.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with any such services, sorry.

From my knowledge, I doubt that any shared hsoting provider would be willing to take you in if you face large scale DDos, which leaves you only with option of a dedicated server. And this would would be way above what you might be paying right now.

Just in case you are do make up your mind towards dedicated, both "The Planet"( http://www.theplanet.com)" and "EV1" ( http://www.ev1servers.net) have fairly decent anti-DDos capability, but I have heard of two others with a much better capability at WHT: Gigeservers(http://www.gigeservers.com/) and Staminus (http://www.staminus.net/)

For what he sounds like he has he needs to find someone that hosts @ Gigeservers(http://www.gigeservers.com/)

Staminus is nice, yet they get dropped near weekly.

                Thanks for the useful links.

The prices are a little bit too much for me but probably if I find some other webmasters to join me the bill will not seem that terrible after all. Also an admin will be needed to maintain the server.

Does that mean that they are unreliable?
                dropped = down?

Yes, goes down. They get hit (irc side) seems near weekly. I'm in the process of moving my eggdrop (bots) off staminus based servers, to different providers.

gigeservers is prolly the best bet.
