Computer Hardware Question...

Hey, this isn't exactly about the internet or Dathorn or anything...but I thought maybe I'd be able to get some help here.

I just build myself a computer, and everything's working...except the USB ports. They're onboard the motherboard so there are no cords to plugin (four of them are, two others aren't but they're all doing the samething), they all get power (the lights and all come on when I plug something into them), the ports are listed correctly in the Device Manager and it says they're running correctly as well...but the computer won't recognise anything that's plugged into them. Any ideas?

...and yes. They're enabled in the BIOS.

Have you tried more then one device and each port?

Yeah...I also just ran an online scan of my drivers (not that I really trust it to do a good job but maybe I should) it told me all my USB drivers are up to date...the only drivers that aren't is one on my sound card I don't see how that would affect anything

Make sure that the chipset drivers are current....

Don't know how, but do you got USB drivers installed?
I remembered the guy @ the PC shop said
"Wow! Did you know you don't even have USB drivers installed?".

Don't know how he got that from checking the mobo drivers.

I went ahead and installed all the driver updates my mobo creator's scan told me to get...and as far as I can tell they all installed, and also as far as I can tell my USB drivers are up to date...what's the sure way I can tell if there's anything newer?

Do the USB drivers depend on my motherboard, or are USB drivers unrelated to the motherboard?

What make is your MoBo?

I have a ECS MoBo in another Comp. and the front USB ports are doing the same thing. System sees them, but when I plug something in, they do not work.

I never had any problem other then that with USB ports. The OS will setup everything up, or the Drivers for the MoBo as well. Google away, and check your Mobo manufactures website for additional info.

What hardware?

What OS?

What motherboard is it? You need to give more info for any real help on this issue. Also have you tried to "google" the board to see if anyone else has had said issues with the board?

One main thing I can think of offhand, is your motherboard might not be grounded correctly. Just takes one piece of metal on metal to create all sorts of "odd" issues.


edit -- the os that you are using, is also needed. Without more info, its harder to troubleshoot and ultimately fix.

There is an Plug&Play service in windows. If it is stopped Windows won;t recognize any new device attached to id, including thoe on USB ports. Check that.
