    IMAP4 vs POP3

    Ref: http://mail2web.com (free POP3/IMAP4 access)

I have a lot of email accounts on Dathorn. Some receive mail in asian character sets. For this reason and others I have standardized on Horde IMP instead of NeoMail or Squirrelmail.

Once you actually get in to Horde, I like it a lot better. However, it is the logging in that always seems to be a problem with external scripts. In the past 6 months I've had to modify my javascript access scripts twice when Dathorn upgraded something. I've decided it is just not worth the hassle.

I found an external web mail system that accesses via POP3 or IMAP4 or SSL. I know that Dathorn and most other web hosts have POP3 and IMAP4 - I'm not sure about SSL email access.

For you folks up on your email knowledge, what are the advantages accessing via the newer IMAP4 instead of the old POP3 protocol?
