    iPhone ?

Has anyone bought one yet ?

I must say I'm rather tempted to. I've always hated windows mobile with a passion and the Blackberrys haven't really appealed to me.

Well, I must say that Windows Mobile is a lot better than it's desktop counterpart (which is absolutely horrible, comparing to Linux, including the holy Vista which HP made me buy with a new notebook), although I understand your feelings about having a device running anything called "Windows".

I am a long-term T-Mobile MDAII user (which is also called QTEK 2020) and I have to say that when I first heard about iPhone I though that it just wouldn't suit my needs, because I have the whole GNU toolkit ported to WinMobile ATM, so I can use SSH, LaTeX, compile C programs instantly with GCC etc. and all iPhone can do are AJAX widgets.

And then I thought about how often I actually use all that stuff? Well, actually not more than 2-5% of time. SSH would be quite useful though. But still, I came to the conclusion that iPhone's strong points (being a great iPod + a super sleek phone) outweigh those inconveniences.

Therefore I would definitely buy it if I'll find enough money (it costs a fortune even with Cingular subscription!) when they will start selling them in Russia.

They aren't sold in Canada yet, Apple didn't want to start negotiations with our major GSM provider (Rogers Wireless) until Q4.

I might be getting a Blackberry soon, apparently RIM hires a lot of co-op students from my school, which is literally 200m away from RIM HQ. And one of the perks is a free Crackberry with unlimited (or so) service, and possibly unreleased models for beta testing.

I'm not a huge fan of phones, I don't even have a cell phone on me. Nothing has appealed to me yet.

Pictures and videos only give it so much justice. Get one in your hands and you'll see how amazing this device is! It's been less than a week, but I see my life and time management improving already with less time necessary at the machine. Google Reader is fantastic as well as rememberthemilk.com. Still trying to figure out my best practices for getting to and from my data.

There is some Python Ajax thing floating around for SSH. So I may need to check that out sooner than later! =)

Now for someone to figure out VNC.

Yea, I found that as well. I think if my local Apple stores weren't sold out that I'd probably have one I've probably spent an hour at the store playing around with it already.

Nice to hear some input from the iPhone holders, brett.

By the way, the exact URL for the SSH client is http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mressl/webshell/ .

I finally got around to picking up an iPhone this afternoon. I wasted quite a while trying to get my home wireless network to work on it. At one point I even had all of the security and MAC filters disabled and it was still incredibly slow. I tried a restore via iTunes with no luck then finally tried a hard reset - it has worked perfectly since the reset. This is the only problem that I've run into thus far.

Lots of people have complained about the volume. I don't have any problems with it. You just have to position it over your ear properly and then it can even be too loud.

I'll have to try the SSH when I have some more time to fiddle with it. I still haven't even gotten my contacts moved over to it

Anything new? The phone isn't unlocked yet, but they say we can SSH it, run arbitary programs (a port of Ruby and Apache already works) and a toolchain is freely available. A simple "hello, world!" application already works, so I hope that a native SSH client will follow shortly.

I haven't really messed with mine much. I want to try their bluetooth headset and see how it works. I've never really been a fan of headsets that I've tried but I hate holding my phone even more, especially in the car w/ a standard.

I agree though on the native SSH client. I can only hope that there will be one eventually. The one and only thing I liked about Windows Mobile was being able to use putty.

The Python based WebShell has gotten quite a bit better from what I've seen but it still couldn't touch a native client IMO. I've not given it a try yet, however.

I will say, though, that I've kept up with a lot of problems that people are reporting with their phones and I've really not had any problems at all.

Funny story: I was cursing my iPhone earlier this week as I had connected it to the USB cable and was going to apply the first update via iTunes but iTunes wouldn't detect my iPhone. I restarted my laptop and the phone several times to try and get it working. I was about to re-install iTunes completely. It then dawned on me that I had plugged the USB cable into the wall power adapter the night before so it wasn't even plugged into my laptop. Just one of those moments...
