Altera usage question.

i'm going to purchase alertra services for my server, but not sure what are the most necessary services to monitor?

may i learn what services to monitor to get that results? will httpd do? do i need to monitor other servies as well? what's your preferred check frequencey? of course the more often, the better, but cost is another factor as well.

what's your recommandation?

SiteUptime.com will give you free monitoring every 6 minutes from two or three different locations (I use London and New York). They ping the http: site; I wasn't interested in monitoring the mail server or other services.

For me, the web site access is the most important, and I'm not as concerned about email and ftp monitoring. YMMV.

What to monitor really depends on what's important to you. Simply pinging a box says that the NIC is operational and responding. Attempting ftp, http, smtp, and pop3 connections are probably what you're going to be concerned with most. Pick what you care about most, and pay accordingly.

You might be right ... I have more frequent monitoring from one free service; I'd have to check to be sure.

I'm using the free service of easymonitor, and it picks up more than we see on the alerta logs here. I presume that a lot of these *momentary* glitches reported by easymonitor are for Internet issues that have absolutely nothing to do with the physical server at the Planet. My point about "picking up more" is not a concern with the server (I have absolutely no complaints), but rather I mean to say that easymonitor seems to have reasonably good resolution for my needs.

I think it checks about every fifteen minutes, so the email alerts that I receive are one to say that the server couldn't be reached followed fifteen minutes later by one to say that it now works. It probably wasn't unreachable for fifteen minutes, but was unreachable for a few seconds, for whatever reason, at the moment when easymonitor tried to access it. Good enough reporting for me.

I only monitor one domain since all are on the same account on the same server -- my assumption is that if one domain is unreachable, then the bet is that all others follow. (I know that this is not going to be 100% true if there is a problem within the server itself.) In my own case, primary concern is that the html web site is accessible and anything else is not so crucial.
