    Email Trouble: ".Net Passport Corrupted"

I have a user who cannot receive email from, or send it to, a Mailman mail list. I checked on my end, and there are no bounces back from Mailman, so I had him check with MSN. Here is their response:

I understand that you are unable to send email (to <mail list address>) from MSN and also not receiving any email from this address. I realize the importance of this issue and look forward to provide you the appropriate resolution.

<Username>, You are experiencing this issue because your .Net Passport <user's email address here> Profile (which is extensively used for authentication purposes) is corrupted (not updated). In order to resolve this issue, I would suggest you to Update your .NET passport profile.

Here are the steps, which will help you resolve this issue.
What follows is a dissertation on how to log on to the .NET passport site and re-enter ... by re-typing all info ... his profile information. Then, he's directed to go into Internet Explorer and delete cookies, temporary files, set space for temporary files to 10MB, then exit out.

He's done this a couple of times, all to no avail. I told him to do it again, then close down all programs and reboot. I always knew there was a reason I resisted the temptation to get a .NET passport.

Has anyone else run into this?

I use an .NET Passport extensively for MSN Messager,
as well as MSN's Gaming Zone for 'Rogue Spear',
an old old but addictive game.

Never had this sort of problem

    BTW, been using the Zone for nearly six years;
forget when they introduced the .NET Passport, but
whenever it was-- been using it since then as Zone required it

Its evidently common enough for them to have a boiler plate letter with complete, detailed instructions on how to remedy it.

But according to my user, the instructions don't work. What's alarming is that while he's getting a bounce back from the Evil Empire, the mail list is not being informed that the messages are not getting through to him. I suspect MSN is simply tossing the emails he is supposed to receive, without informing the sender that the messages are being tossed!

It could be that they're storing them in his Inbox for him...

The .NET passport system is just a way to login to a service. Nothing more, nothing less.

One other member of the mailing list is having the same problem, and he thinks its related to MSNs last security update. He's an IT professional for a large commercial bank, and he has exposure to others with the same problem. And the email, he is pretty sure, is simply lost.

That's not too much of a problem for my little email list, but for a bank conducting business its a fairly large issue.

If he's having the same problem, how can he login and check...

He can log into the MSN account, and some email is going through fine (for instance, the emails to and from me and to and from MSN). He heard from his mother, also on the list, that the one user was having the problem, and he realized he had not seen any mail list messages either. In checking into it, he found the same problem with his email lists at work.

MSN is not returning a bounce message, and MSN admits there is a problem.

Not sure why that's so hard to understand; I wouldn't have posted that its a problem, complete with MSN's response that there IS a problem, if it wasn't a problem. Parsing each statement is probably not helpful, but I understand the temptation to believe everyone's experience is just like yours.

I was simply questioning your post for help to find an answer.
                I shall leave it there.
