    About Custom Avatars.....

Well, first off....... I'm damn glad we are back online! Ever notice how you don't always appreciate something till it's gone?

Second, a question about uploading custom avatars. Since I do Custom Graphics, I program a LOT of custom, animated Avatars. But the new forum has a SEVERE size restriction! It's only 19.5 K. Compared to the old forum this is (I think) less than half, which is very small.

Is there any way we can be a little more liberal on file size? For an animated gif, that's very very small.

Also, I would be happpy to design custom avatars for Dathorn members very cheap. Soon I will have a little html page to show off samples.

And finally, WELCOME BACK!!!!!!! YAY! It feels like home again!

I don't think there is an option for it, but the restrictions are a good thing because it keeps the load time of the forums down.

Doesnt matter, fize size still matters. Won't let me link to mine (which is like 46k or 49k (gif file))

New forums already load slowly for me compared to the invision forums. I set my view to basic, and its still overly bloated for my tastes. Can't wait to test it @ work on our saturated T1.

That's odd, it shouldn't matter to a remotely hosted image. Sorry I didn't know that, I've never used Vbulletin before.

Yeah, vBulletin is a great board, but it's pretty top-heavy! I am a member of several other boards that use it, and it's pretty slow everywhere, especially id you surf with javascript activated. With it off, it's faster.

And I'm pretty sure the file size restriction is set by the Administrator, and affects link as well as uploaded Avatars equally, since the uploaded avatar is essentially a link anyway, just on Dathorn's server instead of yours.

I understand and support the concept of great content, but this is a community, and Avatars definitely contribute to that, ESPECIALLY animated ones! (hint, hint)

(it's pretty hard to fit an animation into 19.5 KB!)

Where do you set this option. I could not find it and I also find this look to crowded with uneccessary toys which are there just to annoy.

I am very sad to hear that someone complains that he cannot use animated avatar longer than 20k. Animated avatar? Larger that 20K? He really wants to piss everyone here...

Also avoid linking avatars from other sites. That would surely slow down everything.

What? My Avatar was linked to here on the old forums, and I never heard anyone complain. It might slow down the newer top heavy forums, old forums it should be fine.

Linking from another site will only slow you down. A wee bit. And thats just you downloading the one avatar. Unless you are connecting @ less than 33.6k you really shouldn't have an issue. It would be one thing, if people had big old pics in their sig lines like I see tons of bloated forums using, but this isn't really the case.

I've got it set to 75k for avatars on my invision forums. I see no real issue with it. And worst come to worst, if someone doesn't want to load the avatar's Invision forums does give you this option in your user cp.

Do you wish to view members avatars when reading topics?

This option also exists in vb to view images, sigs, and avatars, see the user cp.

Then why do ppl complain about the size of someone else's avatar ?

I admit it...... I'm a little spoiled. Since I'm on a broadband connection, I never have trouble with loading speeds. But I do understand there are people with slower connections.

Since I do custom avatars and animations for people, I love forums that allow 30KB size or even larger!

75KB!!!! Do you know what kind of animated avatar you could make for 75KB?!??? A whole darn movie, LOL!

Also, Pedja I'm sorry if I made you sad. The old forum had like a 40KB limit, and it was not that slow. I assume most people are on here for relatively short periods, so if the forum was a tiny bit slower, it would not really hurt you, unless you are on a 28.8 KB modem. Even Andrew surfed with his cool King Cobra avatar.

I use dialup @ my gf's house, and for most forums we just dl the avatars. Then again we set it up so her temp Inet files folder is HUGE (works good for the few sites she visits) And on another one, she used her cp to turn off everything else (sigs, avatars, ect since that board really didn't have any limits)

But thats just me I guess.

and I still dont understand why linking to an avatar slows stuff down? Pedja, can you explain this. Cuz, I don't get it.
