Can anyone suggest any way to gather stats so I can tell where visitors are coming from. Awstats gives countries, but I want more details to narrow down visitors ie: which US State, Canadian Province etc.

I found some interesting products at http://www.maxmind.com but I wonder if I can load the third party plugins for awstats on a shared server or does one need root access to add plugins to awstats?
