I like the simple, and inexpensive, templates available at http://www.basictemplates.com/

Thanks for that link Frank. I'm not in the market to buy,
but some of those have given me excellent ideas for my next project.

Boxedart.com is OK if you want to pay, although the price has risen twice since I've been with them. But they do have a template to suit most needs.

But the free template sites, well it's a lot of sorting through fairly ordinary stuff to find the good ones. These all offer free templates, still take editing on your part though

I've purchased a few of their templates, as well as a couple of the fancy ones you see at Template Monster and the like. I actually prefer the ones at Basic Templates because they don't take a ton of editing to use. And I like simple site designs.

best template engine I've seen and used...

Written entirely in PHP, and free: Smarty.

It's well documented, flexible (plug-in ability) and very stable. There's a bit of learning to do (accompanied by a tutorial) but well worth it. It only took me a couple hours to get the basics down. I'm still learning about nested templates, multiple levels of caching, and more. I've used it in several commercial websites that heavily use N-Tier DB classes and business rule logic.

Also be sure to check out the Wiki with lots of great info too.
