Why is Andrew so inflexible ?

Ok! on offecnces but why do I keep on hearing at WHT that andrew is very stubborn ( i also made a post at wht that this is the only factor why i am scared of coming at dathorn )

What i am basically looking for is a package ( your lowest one fits me perfectly ) where i can host my ppersonal 10 sites .

I am not too much interested in becoming a pro host so you may see that I will have less problems. I am not an absolute newbie but ya some help would be required.I hope i will not be too kicked for it .

I will need to host invision power board 1.3 (as of now ) but later I may upgrade to VB ... I hope that this is not a problem.

what i like is your uptime.

One thing further - I may have a modeling site which may contain artistic nuditity because of the nature of the work... will it be allowed to be hosted here.

people go to WHT to bitch...So thats what you see when you go there.

everything you want to do is fine. as for the nudity site, i would assume no, just wait for andrews final decision. even if its artistic its pushing it.

Fine! i will take it... but is there any place which states clearly your account diabling policy.... it when you disable the account.

What is really scaring me is that if i take an account and you disable me and I have no backup . oopps then its a problem.

I remember reading a post when a poor chap's acct was diables for no reason of his ( his site was hacked by others and this is the nature of the net ) .

I am really confused. can someone please convince me.

I don't look at Andrew as "inflexible." Rather, he is consistent and firm in his policies. I think this a plus in business activities.

As for newbie (or semi-newbie) help, Andrew will bend over backwards to provide excellent service . . . as it relates to server maintenance, troubleshooting, etc.

Don't expect him to provide help with coding, application use and things like that. That isn't the service he provides and you should know that upfront. But that's where these forums come in. Ask your questions here. Read and learn from the questions others ask. The Dathorn community will help get you through problems.

              I respect this point .

Ok. But can anyone please tell me about the account disabling policies that are followed in here.

                Aaha Found something

                Be careful using:

Forum Mods (poorly written and tested mods can cause major problems)
<< I will be using Invision board and Am not interested in modding it too much. I will be using Virgin 1.3 script

Email list programs (be sure all the emails are all double opt-in and send the mail overnight stretched out over a few hours) << maybe I will go in for dadamail which is a double opt-in script.

Don't use persistent database connections. pconnect() will cause MySQL resource problems. << don't know if IPB 1.3 uses it anywhere

Old or outdated versions of PHP scripts, check the developers site for updates and bug fixes often for the scripts you have installed. << My main requirement is for IPB only ...

                Immediate Account Suspension for

Spamming (or hosting websites or services that support spammers) << Nope never. But can someone explain what is dathorn's policy about joe jobs atack ( ref http://www.sitepoint.com/article/sab...coping-joe-job )

Fraud or attempting to commit Fraud << nope. absolutely never

Running insecure PHP scripts << don't know if IPB is Insecure... you never know those hackers

cPanel Demo Accounts (or setting up any open cPanel account) use these instead << ah. i am not selling it to others.

Bringing the server down due to run away script << naah

                Using any banned scripts:
                - IRC Egg Drops & IRC related programs: BitchX ect... << X
                - Proxy Servers & Scripts (EX: nph-proxy) << X
                - Shell, SSH, Telnet Scripts and Shell, SSH, Telnet Alternatives << question here.... i am habtual of using Putty for chmoding my scripts . Is that any problem

                - The Anonymizer << no idea what it is

                - 4nAlbum addon for phpNuke << i don't use nuke

                  I use PuTTY, as well as others here, to connect;
I believe what it means, is installing them on the actual site(s).

Also Andrew, as others have said, is not inflexible...
He's a great business person, always notifies us in advance
for things like upgrades and the like, and the servers run lightning fast.

This can only be done by propperly balancing stuff,
and as such-- it requires a good, firm person

I think most of your questions have been answered by others, but I just wanted to mention something about your nudity or non-nude, or artistic nudity site.

If it gets a ton of hits, you have a good possibility of getting suspended. If you have a site that is a TGP type of site, it will probably get suspended. The reason is simple: those sites generate a lot of traffic, and a lot of bandwidth, and they overtax the server. If that happens, the rest of us on that server will complain, because OUR sites are slowing down because of your site's popularity.

That's why Andrew suspends sites ... he simply cannot allow it to continue, because the rest of his customers will leave. He will be penniless, and won't be able to afford the insurance on his Cobra.

He can't tell if a site is truly hacked, or if you've been careless with your password, or if you have simply let your "friend" have access rights (there really are no "friends" when it comes to a server on the Internet!).

If you have 10 personal site, and you know you're not going to get thousands of hits per day with people sucking down images, you'll be fine. But I would worry about nude, non-nude, artistic nude or nearly nude site.

                      Bad IT management

The problem I see, as I've had problems in the past with Andrew, is bad server management. Rather than attempt to correct problems or try to sort out issues with clients about hackers or bad scripts, Andrew uses a method of brute force management what I call: "I'm a hammer and everything's a nail."

In this method, during a problem, Andrew will "hammer" and suspend accounts right and left without attempting to find out what is wrong or contact the user. This is obviously not good because often times it is regular, policy-abiding users that get slammed. For those of us doing Reseller hosting, it is VERY bad for our business. How do you explain it? "Oh, our web host is just really irrational. So sorry." You can't say that.

The obvious thing going on is that Andrew is overloaded and needs to hire more people to help support the servers and users. If he is residing to using these methods, he obviously doesn't have enough time to deal with problems except bring out the hammer.

Webhosting is an extremely competitive business, with over 6000+ webhosting companies in the U.S. alone. These practices are not going to bode well for keeping customers.

Thats just asking for a flame man

Anyways, Andrew is not like that, obviously you
misread whatever he told you in your trouble ticket(s).

Point is, he needs to terminate the problem WHEN HE FINDS IT.
This makes the server more stable, which is better for you as it means
you can gloat about how stable your services are!

He does NOT have the luxery to doodle his thumbs
waiting for a customer to half heartedly reply..."can you fix it?"

Of course, I don't speak for Andrew, I'm
just going from experience and what I've heard

One of the things I appreciate here is that rather than expand the business so quickly that support goes to hell, Andrew will back off sales temporarily in order to keep the service up. I've seen him do it in the past.

I can assure you, that is not something that is a philosophy at some other hosts. And that is one reason I am not with them.
