AOL + BAD NAV 2005 UNINSTALL = HELL

Customer is having problem with NAV 2005 so I uninstall it and reinstall it. Seems to fix the problem. Go on to clean up some other crap the whole time using Internet Explorer here and there. Users tries AOL and can't access the Internet (it's a DSL setup too) but Internet Explorer can access the Internet. So I do the normal AOL stuff including even reinstalling AOL - nothing works.

I'm thinking uninstalling NAV screwed up the TCP/IP stack somehow. I figure I have two choices try LSPFIX and/or rebuild TCP/IP stack? Maybe three ... convince user it's divine intervention and move them to Foxfire? And hose AOL!

So anyone else have any experience or advice here?

P.S. No more NAV for me ... TOO MANY bells and whistle ... whatever happen to KISS?

      LOL!

I was on the phone with BOTH AOL and Verizon neither one would touch the problem. One guy at AOL did suggest rebuilding the TCP/IP stack but said he couldn't help because it's a windows problem. The guy at Verizon said it's an AOL problem and couldn't help either. If I only had a buck forever time someone at AOL or Verizon passed the buck today... I'ld be so filthy rich, I could buyout Bill Gates and rid the world of Windows.

Personally I think it's the LSP that's broken otherwise IE wouldn't be working, right? Winsock fix isn't called for because IE is working. I'll fix it tommarrow, one way or another. Can always reinstall the whole damn thing. Maybe upgrade to XP too ... ME is such a pain in the ...

What a combination ... ME, the new NAV, and AOL! Sounds like the "false trinity" to me!

ME is horrible by itself. NAV includes so much in its "security suite" that it nearly invalidates its very good virus scanner. In the past, the only complaint I had with NAV was that it didn't recognize AOL software as a virus

I would opt either for an older version of Norton, 2002 or 2003, which you can still register and obtain current virus signature files for, or abandon it altogether in favor of a stand-alone anti-virus solution. The "suite" concept, which first teamed industry-leading software into a single package, has become corrupted by bundling of third-rate and buggy add-ons to a single flagship product.

Newer nav 05 is terrible on older pcs (anything sub 700mhz / me/98). I have a machine @ work (HP 500mhz limping along with its current nav 05 install, bleh)

www.chrispctech.com/nav/NAV2005_REMOVAL.exe <-- tells you how to remove it (including the registry cleaner file) (also doesnt hurt to manually remove - ie. search & remove anything "symantec" and anything "norton" from the registry)
          +
          www.chrispctech.com/nav/Rnav2003.exe <-- nav 2000 - 2003 removal tool (also works with 2004 somewhat)

          -------
You can also try the DNS fix for 9x / Me machines (instead of LSPFIX)
http://www.chrispctech.com/content.php?article.3 which repairs the broken winsock (ie socket error / dns error / page cannot be displayed).
          -------

On older machines I recommend an older ver. of nav. 2003. You can still buy retail copies online at semi discounted prices. And if you can live with the OEM version, you can get down to about $10 a copy.

Usually many people just see these issues as a "magical sign" and decide since "PC's are sooo cheap anymore" that they will get a new one (but don't get all cheerfull, they will still want their old pc to work right, so it can be a "backup machine" (been there, did that 3x this week so far, bleh).

I will shutup and goto bed now. =P

I'm heading out the door to fix this. I hope.

ME, AOL, and NAV? Bad combo.. I tried the demo for NAV on this PC
~ 2ghz, 512+256mb ddr ~ slowed it to a STAND STILL. Hated it.

Oh and even AFTER uninstall, it kept running service-- including
on that was BLOCKING Apache/MySQL for EVERYON, including me

Good luck, let us know how it goes-- its EEEEEEEEVIL !

What version of nav did you try? I use nav03 @ home on my 2Ghz (amd) 1 GIG ram system. Running 2k pro. No issues with it. Got it on my mom's pc (950mhz Duron / 256 pc133 / 2k pro) with no issues.

@ Work we have nav03 on the xp home box (tech b**ch box) 750mhz amd / 256 pc133) as well its on the POS box (point of sale, but it is a pos) (PII 400mhz / 128 ram)

LSPFIx and rebuild TCP/IP stack don't work. Internet connection seems to be working fine actually. Roll back to AOL 8.0 works till second AOL upgrade is downloaded from Internet. AOL 9.0 Security Edition (Upgraded from 8.0) does not work at first but run "browser fix" and it works ... sort of ... we get a really annoying "Auto Disconnect" dialog! Yes it's a DSL connection with no phone line to dial out on! After prying gun out of customers hands we desided to take a break this weekend. If computer is still in one peice and customer isn't in jail ... I'm out of quick fixes. Maybe I can come up something this weekend.

                    One frustrating problem ...

Not sure; think the 04 or 05 vers. Whichever was as a demo
on Download.com back in December or late November.

Just literary license Jonathan ... maybe just a few holes to scare it into letting AOL access the Internet ... that's one fix I didn't try. But frustration was high ... mostly because of AOL/Verizon playing pass the buck.

Add Internet Explorer repair to the list of failed fixes. Forgot that one.

Do they need AOL 8.0? Can they "live" with not having 9? I had an issue on an XP machine where AOL 9 didn't work on it after Nav04 was installed. After playin ping pong with AOL about it, and getting no actual answers from them, except go back to 8.0. (that or tell them they really don't need aol (in most cases people dont need it (obviously))).

Hmmm... Had to uninstall 2004 the hard way just to get 2005 to installed.

Can't rollback to AOL 8.0 either it dies after the second automatic update. Your right about them not needing AOL because everything else works fine but their hooked on AOL.

Glad to know this isn't isolated case though.
