AOL + BAD NAV 2005 UNINSTALL = HELL

Well got AOL 9.0 Security Edition to work. First time I ever was happy to see AOL running. The "auto disconnect" was coming from an old dail-up connection configuration. Now I wonder what happens when AOL upgrades again? Bought me sometime to worry about that I guess....

Still not sure what broke ...

Just had my fun yesterday/today with Nav 05 and win98se (old hp machine, 500mhz 56 ram (after onboard video).

backed up all the goodies, wiped the drive, did all updates, installed nav 05. After nav 05 install, explorer crashed constantly, nav never managed to fully load (nmain would start to load, then hang). Ended up just wiping it again, (its doing the rest of the updates as I type) and going to put nav 03 on it. Found a place online that sells boxed versions (retail boxes) for $24 each.

I think Im gonna start telling customers if their machine is less than 1ghz, that we will not install nav 05 for them. I've spent approx 5 hours on this machine (that I will never get back) and gotten no where. Just as I told the client when they brought in the machine. It prolly wont work on this machine. Bah.

If anyone knows of anywhere I can get retail copies of nav 03 for less than $24 each, lemme know (we won't sell OEM copies). We used to get the dvd cases for nav 04 (someplace online for about $26 each) but they stopped selling 04.

Might want to lower that number from 1 GHz if they're running AOL at all especially 9.0 Security Edition. Security Edition ... yeah suck up all available resources so nothing else can run! I totally agree though.

My customer is looking to spend 1300 on a new tower after this little episode. No more Windows ME! WooWhooo!! Can't believe I kept it going what 3 or 4 years as it is!?

Don't forget, AOL 9.0 Security Edition runs McAffee for it's virus protection, ouch!
Friend of mine at work just had his McAffee subscription run out so he upgraded to 9.0, of course it hung during upgrade, McAffee did it.
It took him like 2 days to figure out how to upgrade it.
BTW, before anyone judges him, we do get AOL free thru work, so a lot of people use it at home if they do not have broadband since it is free...

Virus scanners suck. The first thing I do when someone has a problem with their PC is uninstall the virus scanner. I've had upwards of a dozen times where, literally, by uninstalling the virus scanner, the PC could sucessfully boot after consistantly unsuccessfully booting with the virus scanner (proof in Error logs via safe mode also).

I gave AVG a chance on my machine, but it failed me just recently. I moved my PC from its downstairs location to upstairs, booted it back up, monitor wouldn't turn on. Turns out my big ass 6800GT unledged itself when I moved it. Lets try this again, I turn it on, there's video, goes into the WinXP loading screen....WAAAMMMM, just as your expecting to sign in, an unreadably fast Blue screen appears and my machine promptly shuts off. Okay...? Try to boot normally again, same thing. Boot into safe mode, check event logs, AVG [insert bs here], I uninstall the thing, reboot normally, works perfectly.

If ever, I need to use a virus scanner, I'll just use the Trend Micro free online one.

Update: Customers' new computer is up and running. Big 64Bit with a Gig of RAM. The old computer off being upgraded to XP.

New computer is running NAV2003 which seems to be interferring with OLE in Microsoft Access. As a quick fix woundup convert all OLE Word objects to labels. Would've tried uninstalling/reinstalled NAV if I had a disk ... picking it up tomarrow. Shop that built new PC forgot to give us it... they've got more work than they can handle.

... maybe I can get some programming done now that everything is working again.

That's me right there, the past 2 weeks. Currently stocked with 5 machines on the bench being worked on (by me alone) and another 13 on the shelf waiting. Combine that with the person who dropped off their pc 2 hours ago, asking if their pc is done yet or not = insanity.

Hmm the local PC shop was a mad house busy and they got a custom
XP Pro box built for me in 1hr; maybe your PC shop is just lazy
