    PHP 5

I'm just wondering when people think PHP 5 might start working its way onto servers. I know its a ways away yet but it has its first release candidate. . What kind of time frames do you think we are looking at? PHP 4 does way more than I need, so this is more of a curiosity than anything. Gotta love these smily's.

I hope its a good long while ... long after everyone on the "bleeding edge" has had their sites go down, servers compromised, and whatever other problems and incompatibilities the new release will bring!

Could we please get an answer from Andrew?

I know he wouldn't have an exact date, but a rough estimate.

eg 6 months after php 5 final is released, etc.

        thanks

I'm aware that many things will have to re-written for php 5 so it might be better to keep php 4 for a while after php 5's release.

We've no plans to upgrade to PHP 5 at this point. I guarantee you it won't happen any time soon. Obviously we will upgrade eventually, but right now I wouldn't even dream of it and it simply is not necessary.

PHP 5 has a lot of new stuff, but they say its still very downward compatible with php4 and very little rewrite will be required if any. Who knows if this is true or not, but lets hope. I would really like to get into more object oriented php, that's why I'm looking forward to 5, but it was purely out of curiosity, I have no need for it. I'll probably play around with it on my own machine once the final comes out. If its a year or so before it shows up on production servers that gives me plenty of time to learn it. I also wouldn’t want PHP5 on any of the servers until its proven itself and the bugs are ironed out.
