Yes, I guess that's true, if a particular site's graphics are cached on your HD, your access times should be very fast. But then if you surf a lot, it's probably a FIFO cache, so the graphics might be gone when you come back.

As to the linked avatar being slower- If true, I assume it's because an "uploaded" avatar exists right there on the server responding to the client request, whereas in a "link" situation, the server has to locate, connect to and download the graphic before it can begin to send to the requesting client.

3 gigs is a great size for you, and your girlfriend sounds like quite a "cache"!

Why do I compain and not just turn off avatar display? Well, I actualy I did turned it off.

Idea of avatar is to show visual representation of user so it is easier to identify them. It was not an idea that everyone shows what they can do with graphic tools, especialy not to crete animations which directly annoy by grabbing eyes atention from messages.

How it slows down? If just one avatar must beloaded from slow server, some browser will have to wait it to be loaded before dipslaying rest of the page. Sometimes it happens, sometines not.

On my forum I have very restricted size for avatars and nobody comlaints and forums load fast. However, I have photo album and limitation for phorographs is about 70k for 550 pixels size on wider edge. If one do not know how to optimize photo to match that he should not publish it on web.

Not so long ago, there was recomendation that whole page, including bitmaps should not exceed 40k.

When I go to 'edit avatar' it just shows
"Your Current Avatar" (none) and little
radio button, auto clicked, saying "DO NOT USE AVATAR"

How am I suppose to upload/link
to my good ol' wee avatar???
