Is ther any way to check the propagation of your nameservers, to see how far they've gone or whatever?

There are monitoring services that will ping your site from various places (I have one monitoring from London and NYC, for instance).
As long as you can ping the domain name and get the right server, you know the domain name has propegated to the 13 Root Servers, and your site is accessible from everywhere using the domain name system.
There are thousands of Domain Name Resolvers, or just resolvers, located at ISPs and other places that cache the info in the Root Servers. When someone types in your domain name, it is usually handled by his ISPs resolver (or the one his ISP points to if they don't have their own). The IP address is returned to the user's computer, and his browser connects to your site. Sometimes the ISPs resolver is not up to date, and that can mean some people will be delayed in getting the domain name resolution to the right server.
When I last moved my site, I had one user who could not connect for 3 weeks, until his ISP finally believed him. That's an extreme example and one that doesn't happen very often.
