    Issues with email to @mail.domain.com?

    Hello All-

Recently (helped) move(d) a domain to cpanel30 and I'm trying to understand why something isn't consistently working/resolving correctly.

The NS switch at the registrar was done on Friday afternoon, so I do understand that the change might not have fully propagated for everyone out there, but still.

Old hosting company had mail.domain.com on a dedicated IP, different than the main domain.com IP. Using webmail at http://mail.domain.com:8383 (IMail UI) and sending email from there caused receipients to see user@mail.domain.com as the "From:" address. Many have bookmarked the email addresses as such and have continued to send email to user@mail.domain.com ever since.

Currently, sending mail to user@mail.domain.com doesn't seem to work for everyone. It sounds like it should because a 'dig' query for the MX for mail.domain.com simply shows the CNAME and A records pointing to the correct (cpanel30) IP.

Is it just a matter of the DNS change not having fully propagated yet (I assume so)?

If someone can please chime in, I'd greatly appreciate it. It looks like there's nothing that can be done on the cpanel (setting up forwarders would be pointless, right?) or on the actual zone config side but maybe I'm missing something.

    Thanks much in advance.

Furthermore, and maybe this is a clue into the whole issue, sending a message to user@mail.domain.com via Earthlink webmail gives this error:

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: jz****@mail.domain.com SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:<jz****@mail.domain.com>: host domain.com [69.93.1.114]: 550-pop-a065d10.pas.sa.earthlink.net [207.217.121.251] is currently not 550-permitted to relay through this server. Perhaps you have not logged into 550-the pop/imap server in the last 30 minutes or do not have SMTP 550 Authentication turned on in your email client.
So it looks like the MA at domain.com (hosted on cpanel30) believes that a message for user@mail.domain.com via SMTP to it would in fact be relaying (which is not allowed) even though it would simply be relaying to the same (cpanel30) IP?

Can this be somehow fixed with a trouble ticket for this domain? I haven't submitted one yet (because I didn't think it was necessary).

It seems to be the case for Trouble ticket service.

Thanks; I did open a ticket yesterday late afternoonish and I got almost immediate help... Easy solution seems to be creating a 'mail.' subdomain under that account. I have created it but it doesn't work quite yet. Will give the DNS a little while longer to update but it seems like it should work. I'll update this thread later with the verdict for others in the future who may run across the same issue.

Quick update in case anyone runs into this thread in the future.

          What ended up working was:

          1) Created a "mail" subdomain (i.e. mail.domain.com)
          2) Had to create a Forwarder for each of the email accounts @domain.com (i.e. forwarding from user@mail.domain.com -- select the subdomain in the drop-down list -- to the actual corresponding email account, user@domain.com)

Also, perhaps this thread needs to be moved since it's more related to email and not really DNS. *shrugs*
