will my nameserver work if the domain is pointing elsewhere?

This may sound like a strange question.... Two days ago, I set up to register the two IP addresses Dathorn gave me as nameservers: ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com.

As it happens, I already have a live site for that particular domain (mydomain.com), pointed to different nameservers at another web host. I didn't want to risk site down time, so I left mydomain.com pointed at my old nameservers. I did, however, point another of my domains to these new nameservers, since this other domain is not a live site and I therefore don't risk down time.

So my question is: Is there anything stopping ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com from actually registering and propagating just because mydomain.com is itself pointed at another set of nameservers?

(Golly, I hope that's clear! It sounds like mud in my description!)

    answering my own question...

That was the problem. I pointed my domain to its own nameserver, and the nameserver started working.

Learning by the seat of my pants.
