    Switching Nameserver question

I will be changing my company name soon, and want to get some info ahead of time on how to change my custom dathorn nameservers. I would like to do it in a way that leaves the old NS intact for old clients- "ns1.oldname.com" and simultaneously allows me to give the new one out to new clients, i.e. "ns1.newname.com"

    I appreciate any advice.

I don't know what you mean really. It's not a case of whether they work simultaneously, it's a case of changing by your clients.

You could set as much as ns1.domain1.com ns1.domain2.com ns1.domain3.com, they could work without any problem for your clients definitely, whatever they like to choose anyone of them.

I did this a while back.

All my existing clients had ns1.olddomain.com and ns2.olddomain.com as their domain nameservers.

I set up my new domain in whm (newdomain.com).

I then created A records for ns1 and ns2.newdomian.com. I also registered them as nameservers at my domain registrar.

That's about all you have to do.

When dathorn gives you private nameservers, they are pretty much just giving you 2 ips - you can have any hostnames pointing to them to be used as nameservers.

      Hope this helps.

Hey James, That sounds good, so basically you can have multiple domains pointing to the IPs, meaning ns1.olddomain.com and ns1.newdomain.com can point to the same IP and still work as nameservers for clients?

That is correct cathode. You can have as many different sets of custom nameservers as you like that use those IPs.

              Yep you can indeed.

I then emailed my clients and asked them to update their nameservers, but I also said the existing ones would work for several months.

This made most of them change them over, however I've left the old nameservers in tact.
