    SMTP authentication settings using Dathorn

    Hi:

    I should know this but...

What's the syntax to use when specifying the Dathorn SMTP server associated with a particular Dathorn account?

The cpanel mail page cryptically says:

"Be sure to enable SMTP Authentication in your E-mail client or you may not be able to send mail. If your e-mail client has trouble using a + sign in the login, you can use @, :, or % sign instead."

So does that mean I should specify the SMTP server as:

    mail.mydathornaccount.com

and login to the SMTP server by:

Supplying my usual account login info, with the username prefixed by a '+'?
Supplying my usual POP3 login info as the authentication info for the SMTP server?

I've tried both approaches, but no luck.

I usually use Pegasus Mail, which gives me about 4 different ways to use SMTP authentication, so I am a tad confused...

    Any tips?

I am presuming Dathorn allows remote access to its SMTP servers by customers, aside from via WebMail.

    Thanks for any tips.

Well this all works for me, using Outlook Express (trite I know) and Entourage.

For the user name, just the full email acount name
    eg. dammitjanet@mydathornaccount.com

then in the Outlook option, specifiy SMTP requires authorisation, and tell Outlook to use the same credentials as POP mail

I've been using the mail this way since I got my account.

      Thanks for the tip.

However I still have no luck, even using Outlook Express and supplying the same POP3 credentials.

Weird. If it works for you it should work for me.

      I'll continue experimenting.

      cheers
