You will have to install Horde / Squirelmail etc in a mail folder yourself to get this working. Not sure about Horde, but squirelmail is pretty easy to configure.

I personally just setup a subdomain to forward to Horde.
You can setup subdomain fowarding quite easily via cPanel.

You still have to enter your username/password because of the .htaccess protection though, don't you?

This is annoying because you have to basically log in twice.

yeah, just download your favorite webmail client from the internet and install it to a mail subdomain/folder.

              There is a default access:

              that works fine.

What do you mean by "a mail folder"? Can we create an arbitrary folder and designate it as a mail folder somehow? Does it have to be in a specific place in the directory structure? Or do you mean creating a new folder under the /mail folder?

Any chance we could have a specific example?

When you use cPanel to forward a subdomain, it doesn't present you with a "forward to Horde" option. It just prompts for a URL.

How do we learn what that URL should be for Horde, SquirrelMail, etc.?

I'm also wondering if this solution actually routes you straight into the webmail program, or rather to the log-in screen that offers all three of the pre-installed webmail programs.

And if not, are you still faced with that "having to log in twice" problem?

                    Well, it does. Sorta.

It works fine if you're willing to learn it. But if you're committed to making things as simple and elegant as they possibly can be, then it doesn't work as good as www.mysite.com/mail.

And www.mysite.com/mail isn't quite as easy as mail.mysite.com

If it's just you, the tech wizard, then mighty fine. Remembering one more tech term (webmail) won't tax your impressive brain one little bit. But there are a lot of mere mortals out there that would rather not have to learn any computer lingo at all.

Now, if your attitude is that your clients are going to have to conform to "the way it is", then I suppose that's good enough.

But what about those that really want to make things simple and easy for our clients?

What about making it so both mail.mysite.com AND mysite.com/mail work?

What about making it so that they only have to log in once?

What if clients are routed straight into the ONE webmail program that you-the-reseller has preselected to support?

Imagine how much better life would be if you don't have to hassle with explaining why there are three programs to choose from?

Please, I'd really like to be able to configure web-based email access to be as simple as it possibly can be. I've put hours into trying to understand how to do it, and I still don't have a clue.

I can't even locate the pre-installed webmail programs, much less forward a subdomain to them.

Even if I figured out how to forward a specific webmail program, I suspect that the .htaccess issue will create the "log in twice" problem.

Will someone please take pity and specifically explain how to answer the original question in this thread--with clear examples?

                      To the original poster,

The path to horde would be:

That does take you directly to Horde but it still requires a double log in. To determine the path to one of the other apps simply go to https://domain.com/webmail and log in then select the app you want and copy and paste the path you see there.

The ideal way to deal with the double log in and path confusion is to install your own email application (squirrelmail.org or some such) and install it via SSH then create a subdomain and forwarder for it. If you search the forum here there are quite a number of posts regarding how to go about doing this.

                      Hope that helps

                      To Xoro,

When you become snide and sarcastic towards people who are helping out of the goodness of their hearts they no longer want to help you. We here are exactly the same as you, clients and customers.

                      Good luck
