Spam assassin seems to do a decent job of finding spam, but I enabled my spam box... which never gets emptied.
I guess that unless I want to also query the spam box as part of my client email, turn it off or it will fill up.
With Spam Assassin on, you'll get messages marked as spam, but your client will download them. It is then easy to configure your client to toss anything that says 'SPAM' as the title.
Oh, and Thunderbird does all this by itself.
