    I presume accessing SSH via WinSCP and PuTTY is OK?

    Hi:

    This may be a dumb question, but here goes...

    I've recently had trouble getting shell access to work via the cPanel route, using the cPanel Java terminal applet. It doesn't want to connect - no route to host etc. It is also pretty useless if I want to actually securely copy files up to the server.

    I use WinSCP (http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/ - which is a most excellent tool) and PuTTY against my internal development machine and thought I'd try them on my Dathorn account, as a means of securely uploading files (using WinSCP) and using shell access on my Dathorn account to use TOP, to monitor server usage, when I need to.

    It all works fine on Dathorn I've discovered, which is great, and I have recently been accessing my Dathorn accounts via those apps, via a secure SSL connection through my proxy.

    But I don't want to get in trouble with Andrew if I am not supposed to be doing things this way

    Is doing this all kosher and hunky-dory with Dathorn?

      PuTty is OK, as its been recommended before as an alternative to the SSH client in Cpanel which doesn't work too well. I think using a proxy to access your account is fine; you just can't install one on your server. So if you have a proxy hosted by some other server, you can use that. You just can't install a proxy on a Dathorn server. (At least that's my understanding, and I'm considering subscribing to a proxy account so I can use the fast pipe at work instead of my lousy dial up.)

          All I meant by 'proxy' was that I have a small LAN at home gatewayed to the Internet via a proxy/firewall combination. I connect internally to the proxy, and it then connects out to the remote host, and then a SSL session is run through it. Standard stuff

          I'd never dream of installing proxy software on Dathorn - not much use to me anyhow.
