    Outlook - SquirrelMail - Norton Anti-Virus

I'm trying to help a friend with her email, (I set her website up with Dathorn) and she is having trouble when she sends emails from squirrelmail. The emails arrive into her outlook as spam. I guess Norton labeled it as such. I'm trying to verify the her settings, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas why this is happening?

Also, she is not able to send emails using outlook. Is there a setting to make sure that outlook is defaulting to send/receive from her domain that I can point her too?

    Thanks!
    Greg.

I would start the troubleshooting by disabling Norton and anything else that might be there.

Also, it is possible that the ISP is blocking the SMTP port 25. You can test it by running the following via the command prompt:

    telnet domain.com 25

Replace domain.com with the domain in question. If you see the server's welcome message then the PC is having no problems connecting to the SMTP server so this would point to the mail client.

According to the manual setup instructions in cpanel outlook settings should be:

      mail.domain.com

In a couple other threads it was said to just use domain.com. Could this be part of the issue?

No. You can use either one, they both work the same.

so my friend tried the telnet domain 25 and is getting no response. I have asked her to try and disable her firewall, just in case, but if that doesn't help. What else can I do to help her send emails from outlook?

          Thanks for the help!

You can try enabling SSL w/ SMTP, this sometimes helps but if this does not work then the individual will have to try and use their ISP's SMTP server or send via webmail.

It looks like it's probably the ISP (SBC/ATT) that is blocking port 25. So we're going to try using their SMTP. I was reading on SBC's info page about the filter and they suggested asking the host if they support port 587 for authenticated outgoing email.

So as a general question, does dathorn support that port?

Thanks for the help. Hopefully going through the ISP's SMTP will solve this problem.

That is not something that we support at this time, sorry.

SBC does block port 25. They will need to use their own outgoing mail server plus add in the authentication (their userid and password) to be able to send out email.

My girlfriend has that at her place, and its a pain in the butt to send email from here house, I usually end up just reverting to webmail if I need to send email @ her place.

I use this form all the time to get my customers' port 25 unblocked. It does sometimes take a day or so for them to get around to it, though. http://helpme.att.net/servabuse.php
