:fail: and default email account

I'm sorry, I've tried researching threads to figure this out but I'm just not getting something. On one of my accounts, I enabled :fail: yet the default email is still getting emails. How is that possible? I feel like I don't understand what :fail: is for and how the default email created upon account creation is used.
