How do I change the default mail acounts to :fail:?

In CPanel I see the default account which is my CPanel username. How do I change this default account to :fail: like is recommended?

Depending on your cPanel theme you can either simply enter :fail: or there will be the option to discard the e-mail.

Edit: Just to be clear, this would be under the default address option in cPanel. Your domain user will always be listed under your e-mail accounts regardless, however.

When I click the Default Address link I receive the following message.

Sorry, your current hosting plan doesn't support the requested feature.
Please contact server admin to upgrade plan.

Just trying to figure out exactly what I am doing wrong.

It seems like you might have a feature list or RVSkin setup which is restricting your access to this. You can take a look at both via WHM. If you're still unable to resolve this you will need to submit a ticket for support.

It appears to be a skin issue. Changes to X and clicked the mail option and there the default address option was plain as day.

Where is this recommended? I've never seen that recommended anywhere, usually just the opposite.. unless you have addresses set up for root, webmaster, postman, abuse, etc.. owning a domain theoretically comes with a handful of email addresses one would usually want forwarded all to one, ie; the default. Of course, you would need some nice spam filtering set up as well.. just curious where this recommendation comes from.

It is always recommended to never use the default address and set it to :fail:

You can simply create individual e-mail accounts or forwarders for the addresses that you specifically need.

Using the default account (as catch-all) does nothing but accept unnecessary spam which can put a strain on the servers.

Andrew, just to clarify, which do you recommend for better server performance, :fail: which generates a bounce, or :blackhole: which automatically deletes?

I just found the answer elsewhere in the forum.

I wouldn't use :blackhole: personally. From a sysadmin point of view it adds overhead as it takes the email into the Mail Transfer Agent, processes it, then dumps it. Use :fail: instead as that rejects the mail at the MTA and doesn't process it.
