    Apple Mail vs. encrypted connections

    Hi!

My dad uses his Macbook's Apple Mail to access mail accounts hosted on Dathorn servers. More specifically, he is using either webmail, or POP3 protocol. Recently (few days ago) he complained that he is unable to fetch new mail.

It turned out, that I configured the laptop awhile ago to use port 995 for POP3 and ticked the SSL checkbox. Now that I changed it to port 110 and no SSL it is working again. I tried to get the encryption working again by ticking the SSL checkbox, while keeping the port set to 110, but no luck.

I have no problems with using TLS encryption via STARTTLS on port 110 on my laptop with Evolution though. So I suspect that Apple Mail does not actually support STARTTLS and plain SSL on port 995 was recently disabled for security reasons.

Am I right? Were there any changes recently on Dathorn's side? Does anyone else have similar problems or I am just unlucky?

    Best,
    Z.

Port 995 for SSL will work just fine. The server's SSL certificate was renewed early this week so if you are using anything other than the server's host name as the mail server then you likely need to add an exception for the new certificate. I'm not familiar with Apple mail so I can't really help you there.

      Hi Andrew!

Many thanks for a really quick reply. You were right, it's the problem with the certificate. When I set the hostname to cpanelXX.gzo.com instead of the hosted hostname and port to 995 it worked.

I don't know why Mail doesn't show a warning about certificate mismatch and how to manage the exceptions, but I also don't have remote access to this box, so I can't be sure if he's doing everything correctly. Either way, it fixes the problem for now.

Still, it's quite strange that Mail doesn't seem to support STARTTLS on port 110, which is more or less a standard now and is promoted by IETF. Oh well...

      Best,
      Z.
