FTP problem - need expert opinions

I'm having FTP problems. When I upload more than about 300K of files, one of various things happens - the upload freezes, upload stops but the program appears to have uploaded successfully until one checks the files and they are not there. The files on the server also often won't refresh after an upload. And sometimes rather than stop transmission, the upload will just continually loop and upload and never stop, apparently rotating on to the next file no matter what. Just generaly constant erractic and unstable behavior.

    Strangely:

1.Problem didn't occur until the last month. Previously for a year everything was fine.

2.Another server at another host also located at The Planet works fine.

    3. Andrew uploaded some files and they worked fine from where he's at.

    4. I've used both CuteFTP and WS_FTP Pro, both industry standards which worked fine in the past, and still do at the other Planet host.

    5. The main problem seems to be in dealing with directory structure - transferring one directories or groups of directories usually causes a hang where transmission stops. Opening a directory and then transferring the files into an open directory on the server is more successful.

    7. My ISP techs don't know of anything that would be wrong there, but they unlikely would in any event.

    8. Tracer route below. I know nothing of how to read this. But I don't know why ev1 would be in there, as I only have a few domains with them, and the one in question isn't with them. Anyway, you now know all I know. Any ideas would be really helpful. The account is becoming unusable with the unstable upload problem.

I don't see any thing wrong with that trace. Never seen such fast times before, 7ms? Do you live next door to The Planet?

Have you tried turning Passive mode on or off? Sometime helps with a bad connection... your connection doesn't look bad though unless you have high packet loss which the traceroute isn't showing.

Had a similar problem, and couldn't figure it out.

Until I realized I had used up the disk allottment on that account. That's a pretty basic thing, but you might check and make sure you have the disk space. I would get "file copied" results, but the file would be zero bytes on disk.

        same problem here...

I am having similar problems with uploading to Dathorn via FTP. I am using smartftp with passive mode off. After an uncertain amount of time, the server will timout on me. I have over 500 mb of files to transfer to Dathorn, and cannot find the answer here in these forums. Yes, I have checked the disk space allowed for this account. Not the problem.

Should I fill out a trouble ticket?

        Thanks,

        David

I had the same problem, if I tried to upload folders with a lot of sub-folders it would fail every time, I was using SmartFTP also.

However I never had problems uploading the same folders to a different host that I use.

Now if the upload is large I use Filezilla and everything works as expected.

            Filezilla...

I will give Filezilla a try. Thanks for the reply. It would seem that this would be a bigger deal, unless it really is just a problem with smartFTP.

            thanks again,

I found something that works. The usual instructions are to "turn off" passive mode in the ftp program. I found just the opposite. Anything over about 300K upload only works reliably well if I "turn on" passive mode setting. And that was the case with both CuteFTP and WS_ftp Pro.

                ftp update...

                All,

Just to post my resolution to this problem, in case it may help other in the future. I was originally using SmartFTP, which did not work, with or without passive mode. I downloaded Firezilla which worked flawlessly. I don't really know the why of it, but it never timed out on me. It worked just as installed.

                thanks all,

                  Second That

I was using WS_FTP 95 LE and I kept getting time outs / lost connections on large directories with lots of files. FileZilla works perfect - no more problems. WS_FTP will be getting trashed, I'd been looking for a good ftp replacement anyway and I've found it.
