    SSL Secure Form

    Hello all

I have a potential client that I may be doing a site for. I have noticed on some similar sites that they have an "online application" It is not really doing any $ transaction I don't think..It's just gathering info like a regular form. But it does have the "lock" at the bottom of the page..

I am a real newbe at this stuff.. I know how to do forms to mail and stuff but I don't know how to make it a "secure" form.. You know?

Others have asked me if I could do "secure stuff" too! I looked around in cpanel but did not understand.. Do you set up a 'sucure' directory of something? I'm just kinda confused

    Thanks
    Dave

I'm not best @this, so hold off til others
answer b4 you take any sort of action...

Basicly, from my understanding, SSL is encrpytion,
and must be bought as such; usually its pretty good
and strong angoloiums (can't spell it) and other methods of
complex conversions of text into random text and what not.

And this helps ensure no third/second party may
view this information; I'm not sure how crediable you
can say "its impossible to break SSL"-- there are ways around
(i.e., hacking the site and setting up to collect the info and what not).

Usually, SSL is bought per year, and must meet the requirements
of the host (check the FAQ forum for this one) on the type.

Once all setup, I believe only thing you must do is simply
make sure all the URLs begin with "https://" in the URL,
as this is the note of a 'Secure HTTP Connection' to the website.

      What is SSL?
Secure Sockets Layer. A protocol designed by Netscape Communications to enable encrypted, authenticated communications across the Internet. SSL used mostly in communications between web browsers and web servers. URL's that begin with 'https' indicate that an SSL connection will be used. SSL provides 3 important things: Privacy, Authentication and Message Integrity. Online shopping sites frequently use SSL technology to safeguard your credit card information.

      Why use SSL?
Data is usually sent across the internet in plain text. Unscrupulous individuals often use applications, commonly called “Sniffers” that search for patterns that represent potentially valuable information, including but not limited to Credit Card Numbers, Social Security Numbers, User Names/Passwords, etc.

      Were can I obtain SSL?
Commercial certificate authorities such as VeriSign, Thawte and NewCreations sell certificates that enable SSL on your server.

Check out IIS documentation for further instructions.

Actually Dathorn uses Linux (a type of Redhat to be specific),
and IIS is a piece of unworthy M$ crap....
