Serious problem with IE visiting my site

I used to visit my site using IE normally , but now it suddenly stopped and started to display a download box instead when i type the adress. I even tried to type the adress as www.mysite.com/index.html but when i either refresh or visit other sections i get garbage text like this :
    Code:
    ‹چVmoغ6‏ùW}h64²œ¤ ’ش6ض:)Z ة‚صأ6`@@I”ؤ†"5’²â؟;QٍKœlA›/wامsدoüوê×ظü¯»k(\)لî÷Oك¾خ £èڈ“Y]ح¯àد/َ›op4ءـ0e…Z1E×·…sصe5M3lN†عنرü·è‘l‘r7 ف†و0ui0فŒغK©ىن;G^ف s–ز¯Nٍ)ة•ج… ÷و¬®Mآ‡m´[ه¨cc‌.i) é$ 0™Pـي‏قj#fھ[فغ‹2k’خ-•¨2جEويïچ#شٍِWv$n‹%¶wبƒ'KV¤*ش¸‚D2‹¹¢ط"کق",9#ـلrU^§–[2-4سئls¹B¨”?}~}ر%Gl:ژP‏?µ<|¶سûقخ0îHƒ]
I had no idea what happened. I asked my friend who has IE to navigate through my site and he said it was fine , so it must be my end.

What makes it worse that the only site i'm having this problem with is my own site only and only under IE !!! firefox navigates it without problems (but i don't want to use firefox). This all happened after i installed firefox , set it as the default browser and used it as the default program to open my HTML files on the computer.

I don't know if this belongs here but i couldn't find a solution and now im really desperate.

any help would be so much appreciated

Uninstall Firefox and then do a System Restore in Windows XP to a time prior to when the problem began, and see if that solves it. I've never heard of Firefox causing any kind of problem like this, however.

Also, it's always a good idea to run an updated anti-virus program, and then run one or preferably all three of the major spyware utilities - Lavasoft Ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Microsoft AntiSpyware. All are free to download and use.

PS - your site comes up just fine for me with both Firefox and IE6.

Thats what i did bhillis but i wasn't lucky.

I tried acessing my site using another computer on the same network (we're connected by a DSL switch\modem ) and although they don't show that box , but they still display garbage text when i navigate just like the above.

I don't know who\what to blame , my network , IE , the installation of Firefox or dathorn .... i'm totally confused

I'm assuming you have flushed the IE cache, which can sometimes be persistent. Flush it by using Tools * Internet Options * General * Delete Files.

Then, you might try this ... it has worked for me in the past with weird IE problems:

Click the Start button, select "Run" and type COMMAND in the box and press <enter>. You'll get a DOS window. Type:

        ipconfig /flushdns

After it flushes it out, reboot and see if you get anything different. (This is a long shot ... I've used this when I can't seem to get the new version of something to come up even when the old version was completely deleted ... which doesn't make sense, but I think it has to do with IE's cache somehow.)

Thanks alot Frank , Now i don't get that download box anymore (how could i forget about deleting the temp files)

flushing the dns didn't solve the site-displays-garbage-text issue. I solved it by deleting and reuploading every single HTML page even though it was based on computers within my network that use IE

I still don't know why this happened , but who cares , its gone now

          Thanks for replying guys

Does your site make use of compressing pages before sending them to the browser?
If so, it could have been something to do with that.
