    Ruby?

One of my clients is a ruby developer, and is wondering if Ruby is installed on the Dathorn servers.

I'm doubting it but it would be intersting to know if it is.

    ruby for me too

I'm also intersted in using Ruby (Ruby on Rails) on cpanel 16.

Ruby is currently not available on cpanel16.

Also interested in this... is there any chance of having it installed?

We have no plans to offer Ruby at this time.

          Greetings Andrew & cohorts!
Was searching the forums for "Ruby" and came across this thread. I'm curious about your reasons for not offering Ruby. Clearly, security of the servers in a shared hosting environment is paramount, but I have not heard about any exploit concerns with Ruby. I'm probably not telling you anything that you don't know, but it is becoming a standard language to have available on the server, like perl and python. It can run with Apache using mod_ruby, or you can use fastCGI (or an alternative web server like WEBrick, which comes available WITH Ruby).

I would love the opportunity to work with Ruby on Rails in my web space and I have the feeling that it could be a plus for your hosting business to be familiar with it. (Did you see the article in the Sept. issue of Linux Journal on Ruby where it is called "the hot 'new' Web language"?

Anyway, I'm just curious as whether you have particular concerns that interested users might allay or whether you just didn't feel enough people were clamoring for it yet to make it worthwhile?

Thanks for any reply you may have time to share!

            Hey Andrew,

Any changes in your plans to offer Ruby?

            TIA

No. There is just not nearly enough demand for it to justify the added time in installing it on servers as well as maintaining it.

I would like to see Ruby on Rails support. I would even be willing to pay an additional monthly fee for the first year or so to offset the cost of being an "early adopter."

Sounds good. Seems like others hosts are picking this up quite fast as well into their system after 37signals launched multiple offerings this past winter.

Ruby is inevitable, the only question is when?

I don't have any doubt that Ruby will become a standard, the only question is when. With the speed at which the internet evolves, my hunch is, pretty soon.

For those interested in servers, here is a list from the Ruby website that I found that offer it on their servers.

Dreamhost seems to be good but I rather have it at Dathorn =)

I'm also thinking about Ruby on Rails. It's hot for more and more web guys. Though I don't have enough time on it right now, but at least I hate php a little bit. ( working on Flash & C# this moment.)
