are "www." and "ftp." subdomains?

Good afternoon

I just read in a tutorial: "www and ftp are subdomains". Is that true? I did not setup thos subdomains in my Dathorn accounts and they just works.
And www / ftp are not listed in the WHM subdomain-listings.

cPanel creates a number of subdomains (ftp., mail., www.) when acounts are created so that ftp and mail etc will work
