Blocked due to login attempts - the full story

Andrew,

Can you give us the complete picture as it applies to the issue of IP blocking due to successive invalid login attempts? I need this info to pass on to my clients.

How many failures does it take? 3, 5?
Are these failure consecutive only, or do they build up over time?
Does this affect FTP, email, cpanel... what else?

It includes any login that you make to the server and combines them all. It takes at least 10 failed login attempts in a short period of time in order to get blocked. For example, 5 failed POP3 login attempts plus 5 failed cPanel login attempts within a few minutes would get you blocked.
