    Server Upgrade Question?

Beginning on 5/17/04 we will be upgrading the cpanel08 server to our new Dual Xeon hardware and new backup system. A reply will be posted in this thread as soon as the account transfers have begun. From that point on, any changes made on the existing cpanel08 will not be transfered over to the new server.
Not exactly clear what the part I italicized above means. How will we know whether we are logging in the the OLD Cpanel08 or the NEW cpanel08? Or will we have a new server number? Since this is only 4 days away, can someone please explain this further?

I assume the Dual Xeon will be a lot faster then the old single p4! That will be nice!

I am guessing until he updates the announcement, we will be on CP08 current server. Once a msg is sent out about the upgrade is completed, I would guess we would be on the new server.

From this answer then, I assume that we will receive new log-in information for the new server?

And will the "old" 08 be online and accessible at the same time as the "new" 08?

And will the data transfers all be handled by Dathorn?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is my first server upgrade, and I want to minimize the impact on my clients!

None of the login information, nameservers, or ANYTHING for that matter will change. We are transfering every account.

That I could not answer. Only Andrew can.

I do not know if our server is coming offline, do and upgrade and brough back online as CP08.

            or

If Andrew is building a new server calling it CP37, or keeping it CP08, and then transfering data from server to server.

Will have to wait for him to answer

Zenfort, the upgrades are going in order of what server needs them the most (as in is overloaded/close to overloaded), not in numerical order :-D

Cpanel08 has been a "slightly troubled child" for quite some time now, so it's humble residents are very happy our graduation has finally arrived! :-)

I was thinking (watch out )... after the transfer is complete and everything, could a rsync be done one last time just before switching the servers to keep any changed data? Especially any email or flat file databases.

Databases will be transfered once again, everything else you've been given fair warning on.

Prior to this upgrade, will there be a complete backup of the data on 08, just in case of a meltdown? Or should we be planning on doing our own backups?

Also- before we get there, is there anything we need to be doing or anything we need to watch for to avoid any inconvenience, interruption or down time for our clients?

You will need to re-install SSL certificates if you have them so be sure that you have this information handy. Other than that, you don't really need much of anything. The data is perfectly fine.

                              From experience on CP04:

make SURE that you do a CPanel backup of all your aliases, etc. as those didn't get reloaded on all my accounts... fortunately I had backups from only about 3 weeks before the upgrade, so I had MOST of the aliases / forwarders, etc.

Boy, what a big ol' pain it would have been to have to re-create all these from scratch!!!
