    EMail Accounts/Forwards

    Howdy Dathornians
So, I have a new site I'm putting together... They want a lot of email addresses.. They don't want to actually use webmail or a mail client or anything they just want it to forward to thier Yahoo or their ISP mailbox...

    Ya know... dave@newdomainsite.com
I suspect they want mailto links for these addresses even if I try to talk them out of it... (spam)

Well, I don't give folks just tons of diskspace... I want room to grow you know?

My question is... If I set up say 10 mailboxes with a 1 ir 2meg quota each, and then set up a "forward" for each mailbox to another address, does the mail still accumulate in the mailbox on the server? Or is it simply "redirected" to the mail account I specified outside the domain?

I just want the mail to go to their regular mail account without having to clean up the spam every couple of days...

    Know what I mean?

    Thanx

You could just setup a "default address" under cPanels mail controls to point to their Yahoo or ISP email account.
That way any address@ will go to their Yahoo or ISP account without keeping a copy on the server.

This will save you time in cleaning out their space every week because of unused facilites

It accumulates if no one is accessing the mailbox via POP to downloads the mail.

Then just create the forwards or David suggestion is good too if it's just one user.

Dave, on avoiding spam harvesters from gathering their "mail to" links on their web pages, I've found that even simple obfuscation works well.

See http://www.u.arizona.edu/~trw/spam/spam2.htm for a simple method by Tim Williams of the Univ. of AZ; he has a more complex version using Javascript, but it requires someone to have Javascript enabled in their browsers. Another option is to have the email displayed only in a .gif, without a actual "mail to" link (the disadvantage being the user has to type the email address into their mail client, so I like this one the least).

After I incorporated the simple method into my pages, I thought I noted a big drop in the amount of "new" spam to my main email address. I set up a small test, using two other new email addresses, and rotated them on my page with the simple obfuscation and then without. The one without the simple obfuscation started recieving spam within 48 hours, but the one with the simple obfuscation never did receive any.

Someday the spammers will catch up to this ... or maybe not. With the ability to gather 10 million emails easily for their lists, then why go to the trouble of looking for obscured email addresses?

          Thanks... That is interesting...

I have also used flash for a mailto link also with good success..

The default mail thing is definately the way to go... Hmmm? I have noticed that the username for the cpanel account is the default mailbox correct? So I can forward that to all of the accounts on the staff??

I hope I can talk her in to that... She may want everybody on her staff to have thier own mailbox but she wants the mail to go to those silly yahoo free mailboxes.. I don't think they even use a mail client...

Well I'll see what happens... I only give folks about 50megs of space so.. You know several email boxes would use it up quickly...

          Thanks again!
