    Recreating a counter

Just a quick note about cPanel's counters; might save somebody the effort to figure it out yet again, I hope.

A customer of mine had 3 cPanel counter scripts on his website on cpanel17. Migrating to cpanel59 the data files got left behind and the counter images displayed a warning: "Datafile '/var/cpanel/Counters/*countername*.dat' must be created first". Navigating there with SSH shows that the cpanel folder doesn't even exist in /var/, nor can you create one.

The counter page in cPanel has a Reset form which allows you to set the value of the counter, but it doesn't create the file even as it says its content has been updated...

The (not very intuitive) trick is to click on the Preview button with the counter name set in the above form - the file will be automagically created! Go figure .

Yeah, unfortunately some things got lost after the transfer to the new server platform... such as mailling list archives! :-( I could have asked Andrew to do something about it, but I noticed it far after the old server was taken offline.

I am now investigating into a solution to backup mailing list archives from mailman, but just like Frank Hagan didn't found anything yet.

I've never heard of the Mailman archives not transfering. The counter issue has been present for years and cPanel still has yet to fix it, which would be incredibly simple to do.

You can only grab the Mailman data by generating a full backup of the account via cPanel.

Andrew, I have to double check this later, but I am fairily confident that they were lost, at least for some of my lists. I'll try to check it out ASAP. Thanks for the mailman advice. It's still better than nothing!
