    backup question

I know that we have to pay for a monthly/weekly/dayly backup

In the cpanel however is a backup option. Is this the option we have to pay for or can we backup the site ourselfes at time we like to? If so how do I use this option?

Sorry if this question has been asked tomany times.

Cpanel backup is worth nothing. What it can do is nearly the same you can do on your own with less hassle.

Problem is that important stuff are not backed up (whm and cpanel account settings). My personal experience is that even Dathorns's backup wont help if cpanel account setting is messed up.

Finalyy, when I decided to purchase service, system backup was advertised and included in package. Now it is not. If I understood coreclty the words, if additional fee for backup is not payed, no backup at all is provided.

And again, I am not concerned about backing up web pages and mysql datapase but whm anc cpanel accunt settings, which is not large adn resource demanding but essential...

I found a php script kinda like the DB script I found, but it will backup your /home/username directory, and also FTP to another site if anyone is interested. I use it for small sites, (a few MB's) but I do not recommend it for large sites.

Hmmm...Maybe I should ask Andrew first. The last thing he needs is everyone running a backup script.

YEAHHHH, haha, this should be ok, as long as it doesnt gzip

edit: the more i think about it, PUSHING your backup to another sever may be a problem. i would definitly not run this during peak times OR on site bigger than a few mb.

From going over the script, it looks like it logs into cPanel, and does the Full Backup, then will FTP it to another server.

I actually do not use it yet, havent had time to set it up, but I do plan on using it for sites that I managed for my clients. They are all small. It is not something I offer to my clients because some have a 100-200 Megs.

haha..i was in such a rush tonight to post I was not clear. I apologize.

OZ, the script does work, I have tried a few times manually (at another cpanel host). It worked very nice. I am guessing it logs into cPanel, does a backup then uploads it to a server.

I have plans to use it for my clients I manage, so I have control over it, and only to small sites, but I have not set it up yet. IE: setup cron, and a place to upload it too.

As for gzip as kyle said, I assume it does as it does a cpanel backup (gzip?).

With respect to Andrew, I am guessing he would appreciate that I do not post it, as the last thing he needs are ppl running /home/username backups, all over his servers. As WHM backups seem to be bad enough.

                    I'll let ya know.

sounds fair enough, not something that should be in the FAQ

Isn't that kind of useless, since we can't restore a full Cpanel backup? That can only be done by Andrew, from his admin interface.

No, you can download it, and extract it to get access to all your files
