WHM - ""Generate an SSL Certificate and Signing Request" ??

I happened to notice, down @ the 'SSL/TLS' area of WHM menu,
that it had a page for "Generate an SSL Certificate and Signing Request"

Now, I don't use an SSL Certificate on my site, as I perfer PayPal.
Its a trusted name; who to trust? Some company you randomly found on the web,
or a trusted huge name like PayPal? If you didn't say PayPal, your BSing yourself

Anyways, I'm remembering all those discussions about
self-generating an SSL Certificate, how Dathorn didn't allow it, etc.

So my question is, what is all this page about then??
Basicly it gives me a few options:

Email Addie the 'Cert will be sent to'
Host to make Cert for, Country, City, State,
Company Name, Company Division, Email (again), and password.

Again -- I ask, what is this?
Is it ** OKAY ** to use on Dathorn's servers?
Is it like a weakly medocra-style SSL Certificte?
Or is it prelude to installing one from like Versign, etc. ?

Confused over this one, as I've not
used an SSL Certificate before, nor installed one for my customer.

Am I not supposed to use the WHM SSL key generator thing? This was my first time using it, and I'm still waiting for the key to be emailed to me. Nothing yet. What do us as users need to do to enable https on a domain?

Dathron allows it, you just don't have permissions to run the necessary commands on your reseller account.

Is it like an *simple* SSL Certificate?

Like one used for submitting data
you'd like secure (not credit card info or the likes) ?

Would it make an https:// URL? etc.

you cannot use it unless you have your own ip, and that needs justification to andrew

So if I wanted to say, make an shopping cart
on my website, instead of using PayPal.

I can justify an IP to Andrew,
then use this for my SSL? and it'd work?
I'd not have to go out and pay $30 or so for one??

My understanding is that a self signed ssl certificate will pop up a message to the visitor when they visit a https page.

In other words, the visitors browser doesn't automatically trust the ssl certificate.

So it will work if the visitor decides to trust it.

A proper paid for ssl certificate doesn't pop up a message to the visitor like a self signed one does.

the cpanel documentation says this one is signed by RSA corp...

1) If it fails or I decide no like, blah w/e -- IP still stays?
so I could use in the future?

2) How will it process the credit card info so I get paid,
if I install say osCommerce and someone orders something?

I just want to know before I try all this :P

yeah once you justify it i think it would stay...

you would have to get a 3rd party payment processor(you may be to young to have an account with most of them), some are pretty high priced. It would then deposit in to your bank account. All we are testing here is if the certificate works...and gives you ssl...

Wow...slow support or something today;
I asked (before actually requesting one) for
confirmation that the first IP is free...

About 10mins shy of three hours later,
I got my response, and its just

"If I remember correctly, yes; let me forward this to our accounts department"

No positive, for sure, yes | no, if yes would you like it? etc.
First time ever that support has been this slow, and I must say, poor in response (not long winded detailed explenation)

Note; I sent this at 3:30, got reply at 6 some-odd,
and its now three and a half hours or so later, and
no reply from the "accounts department"

3 hours is still better than 3 days response time.
However I do agree, I find it a little frustrating to ask 3 questions and only get a response to 1. Sometimes the answer isn't covered at all and can be very short and uninformative.

Just keep in mind Dathorn have to request IP addresses from The Planet, so it may take longer than their "standard" support.
